Colombian player receives death threats after World Cup exit

Colombian player Jaminton Campaz received death threats after his team lost to Switzerland in a penalty shootout during the World Cup round of 16, the Colombian Football Federation said. The federation issued a statement on Friday condemning the threats. It said no athlete or family member should face intimidation for representing their country.

Match details Colombia’s tournament ended Tuesday when Campaz missed a scoring chance in extra time and the team lost on penalties. Campaz, who plays for Argentine club Rosario Central, later posted on Instagram asking for respect. The federation urged the attorney general’s office to speed up an investigation into the threats.

It called on fans to keep sporting disappointments from turning into aggression. The federation noted that the threats recall the 1994 murder of defender Andres Escobar after Colombia’s World Cup exit.
