Colorado Hospital Prescribed Puberty Blockers to Over 250 Minors in 2025

Court documents released this week show Children's Hospital Colorado prescribed puberty blockers to more than 250 patients and cross-sex hormones to nearly 550 patients in 2025. The same documents indicate that some patients received multiple interventions, including puberty blockers followed by cross-sex hormones and, in some cases, surgeries.

An insurance-claims review covering 2019 through 2023 had previously identified just over 100 sex-change treatments at the hospital, including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries. The 2025 figures exceed the five-year total by more than double for puberty blockers alone.

Oregon insurance data covering roughly 80 percent of insured residents found that, between 2016 and 2023, more than one in 250 biological girls by age 17 received male hormones, while about one in 630 biological boys received female hormones. During the same period, about one in 100 Oregon children covered by insurance received a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

Several Republican-led states have enacted bans on medical interventions for minors, and a federal executive order has authorized investigations into providers. In response, some hospitals, including Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C., have ceased offering such treatments.

A bill under consideration in Congress would prohibit puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for minors nationwide.
