Colts quarterback cleared for seven-on-seven drills after Achilles injury
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones participated in seven-on-seven drills Monday after recovering from a torn right Achilles tendon. The team continues to monitor his workload ahead of training camp.
ESPNIndianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was cleared to participate in seven-on-seven drills Monday, marking another step in his recovery from a torn right Achilles tendon. Coach Shane Steichen said the session allowed Jones to run plays with teammates.
Steichen added that the team plans to continue the progression through the end of organized team activities before moving to full-team work at training camp.
Jones has been throwing during the team's offseason activities that began in April. He has not taken part in full-team drills and is not expected to do so until players report to training camp in July. "To get him out there in 7-on-7 was huge, to get him in the fold, running plays with the guys," Steichen said.
"We'll keep that trend going, probably through the end of OTAs and then, obviously, get him into team stuff at training camp. It's spring, we don't play for a while, so we've got to be smart with his injury. " Jones suffered the Achilles injury in early December during a loss at Jacksonville.
He also played with a broken bone in his left leg that season. The injuries ended the team's early momentum. Jones addressed reporters last week and said the increased participation made him feel more involved in preparation and meetings.
He signed a two-year contract extension worth up to $100 million in March and has stated he expects to be ready for the Sept. 13 season opener against Baltimore. The team continues to split snaps with the starting offense between Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard while Jones remains limited.
