Comic Book Writer Gerry Conway, Co-Creator of the Punisher, Dies at 73

Gerry Conway, a comic book writer who helped create characters and stories for Marvel and DC, including the Punisher in Spider-Man comics, died at age 73. He died of pancreatic cancer on Sunday in Thousand Oaks, California, his wife Laura Conway said. Marvel issued a statement on Monday announcing Gerry Conway's death.

B. Cebulski added, 'Gerry Conway’s legacy has made an undeniable and indelible impact on the Super Hero stories we know and love. Gerry Conway was born in Brooklyn on September 10, 1952.

He started writing comic book stories as a teenager and landed work on The Amazing Spider-Man at age 19. Conway wrote the death of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's girlfriend, in Spider-Man comics. He co-created the Punisher, a vigilante antihero known for the skull logo on his chest.

Conway wrote for Marvel titles including Fantastic Four, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk. At his last public comic book signing in February, Gerry Conway stayed an extra two hours to sign books and talk with fans despite being tired and in pain from spreading cancer, Laura Conway said. Gerry Conway is survived by his wife Laura Conway and two daughters from previous marriages.

Marvel said Conway had a way of imbuing characters with nuance and emotional depth. 'Gerry Conway brought real stakes to his writing, able to weave together sensational super heroics with the human and relatable, and in doing so created some of the most memorable stories and characters of all time,' Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said.
