Congo Reports Over 1,000 Suspected Ebola Cases Since May 15 Outbreak
Health authorities have recorded at least 220 deaths in the current Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccines or treatments.
The Congolese government has confirmed more than 1,000 suspected Ebola cases and at least 220 deaths since declaring an outbreak on May 15. The World Health Organization has stated that the outbreak may be larger than reported figures indicate. Vendors at Kinshasa's Masina Market sell wild meat including giant swamp rodents, antelope parts, python, and caterpillars.
Some items are displayed openly while others require customers to ask specifically.
Wild meat remains a dietary staple and cultural practice across Central and West Africa. The Congo Basin supplies an estimated 4.5 million tons of wild meat annually, serving as the primary source of animal protein for many residents. The Congolese government prohibits hunting of endangered species such as great apes, but illegal hunting continues.
Wild meat is served in restaurants and sold at markets throughout the region.
Disease Transmission Concerns The U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that Ebola cases in Africa have been associated with hunting, butchering, and processing meat from infected animals. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain. Dr. Tolbert Geewleh Nyenswah of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said outbreaks occur when there is human, animal, and environment interface.
Dr. Misaki Wayengera, a microbiologist advising Uganda's Ministry of Health, noted that some people do not believe the linkage between wild meat and Ebola or remain unaware of the health risks. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka of Conservation Through Public Health said education campaigns should emphasize that eating meat from unknown sources or dead animals carries risks.
The outbreak region also faces armed conflict and population displacement.
