A couple in eastern Congo held their wedding on Saturday under restrictions that limited attendance and physical contact because of an ongoing Ebola outbreak. Local authorities have limited public gatherings and required social distancing to slow the spread of the disease. The couple had planned for 300 guests but only 50 people were allowed to enter the church.

Precautions at the ceremony The Mass took place at a Catholic church in Bunia.

Guests maintained distance inside the building while a larger crowd sang outside. The groom said the couple followed state measures on distancing and hand washing. The bride displayed her ring after the service and the reception was moved outdoors to allow more space.

Church adjustments Church leaders have postponed some scheduled weddings and canceled events such as baptisms that carry higher exposure risks. The priest who officiated the Mass said the situation is critical and that adapting has become essential.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has produced 515 confirmed cases and 91 deaths according to Congolese health authorities. No approved vaccine or treatment exists for this strain.
