Cubs acquire Aaron Civale from Athletics for minor leaguer

The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Aaron Civale and cash considerations from the Athletics for minor league right-hander Aiden Moffett on Saturday. The deal came hours after the Cubs defeated Minnesota 6-2. Civale, 31, is 5-7 with a 5.42 ERA in 16 games this season after signing a one-year contract with the Athletics in February.

The Athletics designated Civale for assignment on Wednesday after his performance declined following a 3.23 ERA in his first six starts. He had previously been claimed off waivers by the Cubs in August 2025. During that earlier stint with Chicago, Civale posted a 2.08 ERA in five relief appearances and threw 4⅓ scoreless innings in a postseason outing.

Multiple starters, including Jameson Taillon, Edward Cabrera, Ben Brown, and Justin Steele, remain sidelined. Cade Horton is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The team holds the top National League wild-card spot and trails the Brewers by six games in the division.

Aiden Moffett, 22, is 1-2 with a 9.67 ERA in 17 relief appearances this season across the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Myrtle Beach.
