They also optioned designated hitter Kevin Alcántara to Iowa and placed pitcher Trent Thornton on the paternity list.
Pitching depth The move adds to existing absences for the Cubs' pitching staff.
Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton, and Justin Steele remain unavailable. Boyd, the team's opening-day starter, is scheduled to pitch this weekend in San Francisco. "After the All-Star break, I think, would be what we're shooting for," manager Craig Counsell said before Tuesday's game.
