Dame Prue Leith said she fears for the safety of her son, Reform MP Danny Kruger, after the killing of Ann Widdecombe. The 86-year-old told Times Radio she has avoided contacting him to avoid adding to his worry. GB News reported that Widdecombe, 78, was found with serious injuries at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor last Thursday morning.
Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation and treating the death as a targeted attack. A 28-year-old white British man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and terrorism offenses. Kruger, 51, represents East Wiltshire and joined Reform UK from the Conservatives in September 2025.
Leith said she believes the government will do everything possible to protect MPs and that the UK has long resolved disagreements through debate and votes rather than violence. Andy Burnham, the Makerfield MP, called for a full review of security arrangements for parliamentarians.
He told reporters at Westminster that politics has darkened over the past decade and that social media contributes to toxicity around political debate.
Burnham knew Widdecombe from their time together in the Commons. Leith added that her conversations with her son remain respectful despite their political differences.
