Defence Investment Plan stays unpublished

A senior opposition lawmaker told GB News that the continued absence of the Defence Investment Plan indicates disorder inside the government. The lawmaker said the plan had been expected on the day of the interview and that briefings would normally have been arranged by that point.

The former defence secretary resigned and released a letter stating that the Treasury had been unwilling to allocate the resources required for national defence at a time of rising threats. The letter described the situation as untenable.

Opposition reaction The opposition lawmaker described it as extraordinary that the plan had not appeared and accused the government of placing greater emphasis on expanding the welfare system. The lawmaker stated that funding welfare at the current level leaves insufficient resources for the armed forces.

The same lawmaker expressed frustration that questions about the plan had been raised repeatedly in parliamentary sessions over several months without resolution. The lawmaker urged the government to publish the document promptly. The lawmaker also criticised the energy department's resistance to finding savings and said the threat environment, including activity by Russian vessels and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, requires immediate attention.
