Christina Bohannan won the Democratic primary in Iowa's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, CBS News projects. The district covers the southeastern corner of the state and has produced several close House races. Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has held the seat since 2021.

Miller-Meeks first won the seat by six votes in 2020.

She defeated Bohannan by about 20,000 votes in 2022 and by 799 votes in 2024.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the November race a toss-up. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has identified the contest as one of its top targets. Miller-Meeks and Bohannan hold similar cash reserves, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission filings.

Democrats have also invested in the open Senate seat and the governor's race. Democrats have cited national conditions including gas prices, developments in Iran, and tariff effects as factors they hope will aid their efforts to gain seats.
