Brian Poindexter, a 46-year-old union ironworker, is running to flip a Republican congressional seat in Ohio. The Atlantic reported that he and other Democratic candidates are highlighting working-class male backgrounds to appeal to voters.
Brian Poindexter, a 46-year-old Democratic candidate for Congress in Ohio, told voters there is nothing wrong with being masculine after finishing a Reuben sandwich at a deli outside Cleveland. Poindexter, who began working in a machine shop as a teenager and later became a union ironworker, drives a Ram Big Horn pickup truck and built a backyard shed with his campaign manager.
He is seeking to flip a Republican-held seat in a district that supported President Trump by more than 10 points in the last election.
Poindexter said Democrats have catered too much to the softer side and should be well-rounded. He met with community members after a town-hall event in Brook Park, Ohio, on July 1, 2026. Poindexter won a crowded Democratic primary in May 2026 with support that included Bernie Sanders, who held a rally for him that drew more than 1,500 people.
The Atlantic reported that several other Democratic candidates are presenting similar profiles. They include Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter and union leader in Pennsylvania; Chaz Molder, a Tennessee mayor and hunter; Jamie Ager, a North Carolina farmer; and Matt Maasdam, a Navy SEAL running in Michigan.
In Texas, Democratic nominees Bobby Pulido and Johnny Garcia are also competing in GOP-leaning districts.
Poindexter served on the Brook Park city council and voted for George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004 and John McCain in 2008 before supporting Barack Obama’s reelection in 2012. He was charged with assault at age 18 and faced disorderly conduct charges in 2002 and 2003.
He pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor fireworks charges while on the council. His opponent, Republican incumbent Max Miller, faces accusations of domestic abuse from his ex-wife Emily Moreno, who alleges he threw boiling water at her. Miller has denied the claims and is suing Moreno for defamation.
Miller shared secret recordings of Moreno with the New York Post in June 2026. At a recent town hall, Poindexter said he does not know a whole lot about how AI works but supports balancing technological advancements with protections for displaced workers.
