Democratic Primary Winner Conley to Face Lawler in New York 17th District Race

Cait Conley won the Democratic primary for New York's 17th Congressional District on Tuesday. The 41-year-old Army veteran and counterterrorism expert will face Republican Representative Mike Lawler in the November general election. Conley described the contest as a contest for control of the House.

"This is a fight for the Hudson Valley, but it is also a fight for this country and taking back the House and putting a check on this administration and getting this country back on track," she told Newsweek on Thursday.

Background on the Candidates Conley served 16 years in the Army, including six deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. She said her military experience prepared her to address what she called an affordability crisis affecting families in the district. Lawler, 39, is seeking a third term.

He has supported some bipartisan measures and has criticized certain administration immigration policies while campaigning with President Trump.

The district was won by former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Democrats outnumber Republicans among registered voters there. The race is rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report. University at Buffalo political science professor Shawn Donahue said the outcome could affect Democratic efforts to regain House control.

Lawler said he has passed dozens of bills during his time in office, more than a dozen of which were signed into law. He cited his work on the state and local tax deduction cap, which increased the limit from $10,000 to $40,000. Lawler also addressed a Supreme Court decision issued Thursday that permits the administration to end temporary protected status for certain Haitian and Syrian immigrants.
