Democratic socialists win mayoral races in New York, Seattle and Washington DC

Zohran Mamdani assumed the mayoral post in New York and Katie Wilson took the same office in Seattle earlier this year. Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Washington DC last week and is expected to prevail in the general election.

The three victories have drawn attention inside the Democratic Party to candidates who identify as democratic socialists. A fourth contest is scheduled in Los Angeles, where city council member Nithya Raman, also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, faces incumbent mayor Karen Bass in a November runoff.

Policy record and local priorities On Thursday a New York City board approved a rent freeze covering nearly one million apartments, fulfilling one of Mamdani’s campaign pledges. Mamdani’s administration has emphasized routine municipal services such as snow removal and street maintenance.

Wilson campaigned on affordable housing, higher corporate taxes and expanded worker protections. Lewis George centered her nomination bid on restoring basic city services after sections of the National Mall were closed following events held by the White House.

Party positioning Democratic socialists differ from liberal Democrats by seeking greater public control over economic decisions rather than regulation within a market framework. Supporters argue that recent wins demonstrate the approach can produce measurable local results.

DSA national co-chair Megan Romer said the organization is now focused on governing details such as waste collection and road repair once candidates reach office. Former Sanders campaign aide Corbin Trent stated that voters rejected messages that portrayed existing conditions as largely acceptable.
