Democrats Win Wisconsin Supreme Court Seat; Republican Secures Georgia Congressional District in Special Election

Chris Taylor defeated Maria Lazar in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election on April 1, 2025, securing a liberal majority of 5-2 on the court. This marks the fourth consecutive victory for liberal candidates in state supreme court races since 2020. Taylor received 975 votes to Lazar's 711 in Ripon, Wisconsin, the city where the Republican Party was founded in 1854.

In Fond du Lac County, which includes Ripon, President Donald Trump won 64% of the vote in the 2024 presidential election compared to Kamala Harris's 35%. Taylor's win occurred despite the county's conservative leanings. The election drew national attention due to its implications for judicial balance in the battleground state.

Fuller, a Trump-endorsed Republican, won the special election for Georgia's 14th Congressional District on April 1, 2025, replacing Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Fuller defeated Democrat Shawn Harris by approximately 12 percentage points. The district, located in northwest Georgia, is predominantly conservative. Despite the Republican victory, Democratic candidate Harris shifted the district 25 points to the left compared to the 2024 presidential race results.

This represents the largest such shift for Democrats in the district's recent elections. Fuller's margin was narrower than anticipated based on prior Republican performances.

The Wisconsin race featured Taylor, backed by Democrats, against Lazar, supported by Republicans and conservative groups.

Taylor's victory expands liberal influence on issues such as abortion rights and redistricting. In Georgia, the special election filled a vacancy left by Greene's resignation.
