Denmark's Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on the afternoon of 14 May 2026 due to angina, the Royal House of Denmark said. The former queen will remain at Rigshospitalet over the weekend for observation. The Royal House of Denmark issued a statement on Thursday that described her condition in straightforward terms.
"Her Majesty is tired, but in good spirits," the statement said. The episode comes after Queen Margrethe underwent major back surgery in 2023 and abdicated the throne in January 2024.
She passed the throne to her eldest son Frederik in January 2024 after reigning in the Scandinavian country for 52 years. She had long vowed that she would never abdicate, but the 2023 surgery led to a change of heart. Euronews reported that the former sovereign remained hugely popular among Danes for subtly modernising the monarchy.
Beyond her royal duties, Queen Margrethe won a Danish film award for best costume in 2024. She translated Simone de Beauvoir's "All Men Are Mortal" under a pseudonym with her late husband, Prince Consort Henrik.
