Denver International Airport to Convert Underground Tunnels Into Public Walkways
Denver International Airport plans to open sections of its existing tunnel network as pedestrian walkways linking concourses A, B, and C. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027 and will be funded by airport revenue rather than taxes.
denverpost.comDenver International Airport will convert portions of its underground tunnel system into pedestrian walkways connecting concourses A, B, and C. The project is intended to provide an alternative to the airport's current train system.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
The work will cost between $300 million and $700 million and will be financed through airport revenue, Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington told CBS News. The tunnel conversion will occur alongside the airport's Vision 100 expansion plan, which includes renovation of the Great Hall.
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said the decision responds to passenger requests for easier movement between concourses. He added that travelers may also gain a closer view of the tunnels.
The airport has been the subject of online speculation since its opening in 1995, with theories involving secret bunkers, military facilities, and other claims. The airport has stated that the tunnels are less than two miles long and contain work and office spaces.
In 2018 the airport launched the DENFILES campaign, which displayed images referencing the theories on construction barriers. The airport has also hosted an exhibition titled Conspiracy Theories Uncovered that displayed related artwork and photography.
