Detransitioner Describes Medical Transition and Reconstruction Challenges
Claire Abernathy began identifying as a boy at age 12 and received testosterone and a double mastectomy by age 14. She later stopped treatment and sought breast reconstruction but faced age-based refusals from surgeons.
Washington ExaminerClaire Abernathy began identifying as a boy at age 12 and was placed on testosterone by age 14, according to her account to the Washington Examiner. The summer after eighth grade she underwent a double mastectomy at the American Institute for Plastic Surgery in Plano, Texas.
Abernathy said the initial consultation lasted about 15 minutes and that she did not receive an informed consent packet until the day of surgery. She reported that the procedure did not produce the expected relief and that she developed open wounds afterward.
Abernathy stopped taking testosterone at age 16 and began seeking breast reconstruction at age 17. Multiple surgeons declined to consult with her, citing her age as too young for the procedure. She stated that the process from consultation to reconstruction surgery took more than a year.
Abernathy said the contrast between the speed of the original mastectomy and the delays in reconstruction struck her as inconsistent.
Abernathy now serves as an ambassador for Independent Women and testified before a Senate committee hearing on gender transition procedures for minors, though the hearing was postponed. She said she intends to continue advocating for legislation restricting such treatments for children.
Abernathy reported that she has lost relationships with former friends and family members since beginning detransition. She described the past year as one of the better periods in her life despite ongoing losses.
