Detroit Tigers Remove Triple-A Manager After Harassment Investigation

The Detroit Tigers terminated the contract of Triple-A Toledo manager Gabe Alvarez on Tuesday due to a violation of club policy after an investigation into allegations of harassment by a female employee. The Athletic reported the harassment allegations on Wednesday afternoon.

The organization said the latest issue was brought to light on Monday. It was not immediately clear what specifically Alvarez is alleged to have done. The dismissal continues a pattern for the franchise, which has seen multiple accusations of inappropriate conduct toward women by employees since 2023.

The firing marks the second high-profile departure this year for the organization. An assistant general manager resigned in April 2025 after an internal investigation by Ilitch Sports + Entertainment discovered he sent lewd photos to female team staffers, according to The Athletic.

In September, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment CEO Ryan Gustafson told The Athletic that the organization did not need outside counsel to examine its workplace culture. He said the group would focus on continued improvement but was confident there was not a larger issue from a misconduct standpoint.

Alvarez, 52, had been viewed as a possible future major league manager after his promotion to lead the Triple-A Toledo team last year. He previously managed Double-A Erie, which won the Eastern League title in consecutive seasons in 2023 and 2024. Alvarez played college baseball at USC in the early 1990s and returned there as an assistant coach in 2010.

He had a brief major league career with the Tigers from 1998 to 2000.
