Djokovic Loses to Fonseca at French Open in Five Sets

Novak Djokovic lost to Joao Fonseca in five sets during the third round of the 2026 French Open at Roland Garros on May 29. The match ended 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. Djokovic had led two sets to none. Djokovic said Fonseca showed strong potential after the match.

"He definitely has the potential," Djokovic said. "The talent he’s got… The firepower… The whole Brazilian nation cheering him on. "You just have to say well done and congratulate him," he said. "Hats off. He just played lights out tennis. " Fonseca reached the fourth round of a major tournament for the first time.

He will next face Casper Ruud. Fonseca said he is focusing on his next match. "I’m just thinking about my next match," he said. " Fonseca has now come back from two sets down in each of his last two matches. He said his team faces questions due to bias against Brazilians.

Sinner lost earlier, and Alcaraz withdrew with a wrist injury. Six American men reached the third round, the most since 1993. Eleven total American players, including five women, advanced to that stage. Sinner and Djokovic will next prepare for Wimbledon, which begins June 29.
