Russian authorities said air-defense units downed 72 Ukrainian drones over Saint Petersburg on July 4. One drone struck an oil terminal in the Kirovsk district, and debris fell near the port of Vysotsk and the Peterhof palace complex. Saint Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov stated on social media that the terminal strike caused no casualties and that technical issues had been resolved.
He added that another drone crashed in Peterhof with no reported damage or injuries. Leningrad region officials reported debris around the port of Vysotsk north of the city. Details of any damage at the port remain under review.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces struck port oil infrastructure and the Kronstadt naval base, describing Kronstadt as an important military target. The drone incidents followed a Russian strike on Kyiv earlier in the week that killed 30 people.
Ukraine has expanded strikes on Russian territory farther from the border in response to ongoing Russian attacks since February 2022.
