Dua Lipa Sues Samsung Over Unauthorized Use of Her Image on TV Packaging
The pop star filed the lawsuit Friday in California federal court, accusing the electronics maker of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, breach of publicity rights and misappropriation of her likeness. Samsung said the image came from a third-party partner that provided explicit assurances permission had been secured.
thehollywoodgossip.comDua Lipa filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics on Friday in the US District Court for the Central District of California, seeking at least $15 million in damages. The lawsuit accuses Samsung of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, breaching publicity rights and misappropriation of Lipa’s likeness and image.
It states that Samsung used a photograph titled “Dua Lipa — Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024” on the front of cardboard boxes containing televisions for retail sale.
The image appeared on packaging for Samsung television models sold in the US. Dua Lipa is the owner of all rights, title and interest in the image, which was taken during her 2024 Austin City Limits Festival performance. She first became aware of Samsung’s use of her image in June 2025 and demanded that the company stop.
Samsung repeatedly refused those demands, according to the lawsuit. The complaint alleges that Samsung’s use of the image has caused and continues to cause dilution of Dua Lipa’s brand identity and commercial goodwill. It claims the packaging was designed to improperly capitalize on her success to promote and sell the products, falsely suggesting she endorsed them.
Dua Lipa has commercial partnerships with Puma, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. She has collaborated with Apple, Porsche, and Chanel and became a global ambassador for Nespresso. Her most recent album, Radical Optimism, was released in 2024.
She performed in Cleveland in 2024. Samsung used the image in 2025. In a statement, the company said the image was provided to it by a third party for its free streaming service Samsung TV Plus. It received explicit assurance from the content partner that permission had been secured, including for the retail boxes.
"Given this assurance, we deny any allegations of intentional misuse," Samsung said. "Samsung has great respect for Ms. Lipa and the intellectual property of all artists. We have actively sought and remain open to a constructive resolution with Ms.
A spokesperson for Samsung Electronics had earlier declined to comment on pending litigation. Dua Lipa’s lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
