Twin earthquakes struck Venezuela's coastal state of La Guaira on June 24, killing 5,069 people and injuring 16,740, France 24 reported. The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude events occurred within one minute of each other. National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez stated the casualty figures on Telegram.
Most of the injured have since been discharged from hospitals, Rodriguez added. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced on Friday that Venezuela accessed $346 million from its IMF reserves for reconstruction. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed the release from Venezuela's reserve tranche for urgent humanitarian needs.
Venezuela holds 3.568 billion Special Drawing Rights at the IMF, equivalent to about $5.1 billion. The IMF and World Bank announced in April they were resuming relations after the United States recognized the interim government in January. Ties with the institutions had been frozen since 2019.
