Germany upgraded its national security stance from an abstract threat level to a high threat level on July 18. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the change rests on increasing reports and intelligence. He told Welt am Sonntag that plans for attacks against the country are clearly discernible.
"This means that the risk of attacks must be reckoned with at all times in Germany," Dobrindt stated. He cited risks to German infrastructure, individuals and institutions. The Interior Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for more details.
Germany has recorded several attacks in recent years. A Saudi doctor was sentenced to life in prison in June for killing six people and injuring hundreds by driving a rented BMW into crowds at a historic market in Magdeburg days before Christmas 2024.
A German court in 2025 found a Syrian citizen guilty of an Islamic State-inspired stabbing attack at a festival in Solingen that killed three people and injured 10 others in 2024.
