Eastern U.S. Heat Wave Breaks Dozens of Records, Prompts Some Event Changes

Extreme heat across the eastern United States broke or tied at least 39 daily temperature records from July 2 to July 3, 2026, and forced changes to Independence Day events. , recorded 102 degrees on both days, surpassing records that had stood for more than 120 years.

Philadelphia reached 103 degrees on July 2, tying a mark from 1901, while New York City’s Central Park hit 100 degrees for the first time since 2012.

A 68-year-old man died in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania, on July 2 after suffering a heart attack attributed to heat exhaustion while trimming bushes outdoors. The Berks County Coroner’s Office said high temperatures exceeded 100 degrees at the time. The CDC reported extremely high rates of heat-related illness across the Northeast on the same day.

The July Fourth parade scheduled for Saturday morning in Washington was canceled because of the heat. President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair on the National Mall opened two hours late at noon on July 3. In the New York metro area, Con Edison recorded thousands of customer outages on July 3 and implemented voltage reductions in Staten Island, Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Westchester to avoid longer disruptions.

World Weather Attribution stated on July 3 that the intensity of the current heat and humidity would have been virtually impossible without fossil-fuel-driven climate change. Friederike Otto, professor of climate science at Imperial College London, said the disruptions showed climate change already affecting everyday activities.

Temperatures in the 90s and low 100s are forecast from New England into the Southeast on July 4, with Philadelphia expected to reach 100 degrees and Washington another triple-digit reading.
