EasyJet flight EZY2618 from Hurghada, Egypt, to London Luton diverted to Rome Fiumicino on Tuesday night after a passenger informed crew that a power bank was charging in the aircraft hold. The captain diverted the flight as a precaution in line with safety regulations that prohibit power banks from charging in checked baggage during flight.

Flight data from FlightRadar24 showed the aircraft at 36,000 feet over the Adriatic Sea when it turned and landed about 20 minutes later. The plane touched down safely, and passengers disembarked without incident. The airline stated there was no actual problem with the power bank itself.

An EasyJet spokesperson said the airline provided hotel accommodation and meals where available, and refreshments for passengers who remained in the airport. The spokesperson added that EasyJet operates its fleet in strict compliance with manufacturers' guidelines and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the diversion and delay.

Many airlines require power banks to be carried in hand luggage rather than checked bags because of the fire risk associated with lithium-ion batteries. EasyJet limits passengers to a maximum of two power banks per person, each not exceeding 160 watt-hours, and requires individual protection such as original packaging.

Ryanair prohibits power banks in checked baggage and overhead compartments and bans their use during taxi, take-off, and landing. British Airways restricts power banks to 100 watt-hours and requires storage in seat pockets or bags under the seat in front.
