The chairman of the ECOWAS Authority visited Ghana on Friday to meet with the country's president after flooding killed at least 13 people and displaced 48,000 others. The chairman arrived at Accra International Airport and was received by his host. The two leaders discussed the flood response and regional security issues ahead of the ECOWAS Summit set for July 12-19 in Freetown.
Heavy rainfall of 140 millimeters on June 29 caused flooding that affected seven regions in addition to the capital. Seven people remain missing. Military personnel have been deployed to clear waterways and debris. The finance minister has released funds for relief supplies to affected families.
Ghana's president said normal operations could resume within one to two weeks. The chairman conveyed sympathies from his country and expressed solidarity with those affected.
