Eighth Virginia Prosecutor Says He Will Not Enforce New Assault Weapons Ban
Appomattox County Commonwealth Attorney Leslie M. Fleet stated he and the county sheriff will not enforce the state's recently signed assault weapons restrictions. Seven other prosecutors have issued similar statements. The law is scheduled to take effect July 1.

Appomattox County Commonwealth Attorney Leslie M. Fleet announced Thursday that he and the county sheriff will not enforce Virginia's new restrictions on assault weapons or public carry of such firearms. Fleet posted on Facebook that the measures signed into law by Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger are unconstitutional. U.S. Supreme Court precedent on Second Amendment rights.
Seven other Commonwealth's Attorneys have made comparable announcements. Democratic Virginia Del. Joshua Cole told WTVR that legislators are considering measures to address officials who decline to enforce statutes. Democratic Attorney General Jay Jones stated that Commonwealth's Attorneys are elected to enforce laws passed by the General Assembly and signed by the governor.
