U.S. and Iran agree on 60-day roadmap for nuclear and sanctions talks

Mediating countries announced Sunday that the U.S. and Iran had established a road map for reaching a final deal within 60 days during high-level talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. The joint statement said the session produced a High Level Committee to provide political oversight of mediation and to begin immediate technical talks on Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and dispute resolution.

The same statement created a deconfliction line between the parties and Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi posted on X that the meeting delivered “major progress to end [the] Lebanon War” and noted advances on oil exports, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, frozen assets, and reconstruction plans.

Iranian officials told Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency that the delegation had protested recent U.S. verbal threats and was reviewing an appropriate response, calling any threat a serious violation of the agreement. Iran said Saturday it had again closed the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which 20 percent of the world’s oil passes.

The U.S. military denied the claim that Iran controls the strait.

Ceasefire strains and internal warnings Israel killed at least 16 people in strikes in Lebanon on Saturday, the country’s Health Ministry said, after Friday strikes killed 83. The Israel Defense Forces stated that Hezbollah had launched more than 50 projectiles toward soldiers and that Israel responded against Hezbollah targets.

Hezbollah said it had adhered to the ceasefire and accused Israel of making false claims to sabotage the Iran-U.S. agreement.

diplomat said the parties had held robust discussions on all elements of the nuclear deal and planned to work through the night. Talks are scheduled to continue for the rest of the week.
