England Defenders James and Quansah Miss Final Training Before DR Congo Match

Reece James and Jarell Quansah missed England’s final training session before Wednesday’s World Cup last-32 match against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Both players are following individual rehabilitation programs and are unlikely to feature. James sustained a hamstring injury earlier in the tournament.

Quansah twisted his ankle during England’s 2-0 group-stage win over Panama. Tino Livramento was already ruled out before the tournament began. England manager Thomas Tuchel is considering Djed Spence or Ezri Konsa to fill the right-back role.

Declan Rice returned to training after being rested for the Panama match. Bukayo Saka started against Panama after recovering from an Achilles problem. Wide attacking options also include Noni Madueke, Anthony Gordon, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers.

DR Congo reached the knockout stage for the first time after beating Uzbekistan 3-1. The winner of Wednesday’s match will face either co-host Mexico or Ecuador in the round of 16. "All England squad members are out training at Swope Soccer Village this morning apart from Reece James and Jarell Quansah who are following their own programmes," the England squad statement said via X.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said the squad is focused on winning in 90 minutes but prepared for extra time or penalties if needed.
