Amber heat health alerts have been extended to the north of England as temperatures reached 35C on Thursday. The alerts, which indicate likely disruption to health services and possible travel delays, now apply to almost all of England and remain in place until 21:00 BST on Sunday.
NHS England stated that many ambulance services are under sustained pressure from the heat. Rail operators reported heat-related issues on some services and advised passengers to expect further disruption.
Temperature records and regional conditions The Met Office announced that Thursday marked the eighth day this year when temperatures reached or exceeded 34C, surpassing the previous records set in 1976 and 2020. A further reading of 34C or higher is expected on Friday.
The highest temperature recorded on Thursday was 35.1C in Wisley, Surrey. Readings in other parts of the United Kingdom included 30.4C in Cardiff, 27.0C in Aboyne, and 25.0C in Killowen.
Infrastructure and public safety measures The UK's electricity grid operator requested additional power supplies during the heatwave due to reduced efficiency and higher demand from cooling equipment. Officials said margins could tighten on Thursday evening but did not indicate a risk of shortages.
The National Fire Chiefs Council warned of increased wildfire risk and advised against using disposable barbecues in open areas. Emergency services recommended extra caution around water and advised the public to stay hydrated and limit sun exposure between 12:00 and 16:00.
