A federal agent shot and killed a man inside a Memphis hotel room on Wednesday morning during service of a drug warrant. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. as U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents executed a Shelby County warrant.
The suspect refused to open the door, prompting agents to force entry, U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Brady McCarron said. An initial Marshals Service release stated the man pointed a handgun at task force members before he was killed.
No officers were injured. The DEA team included at least one Memphis Police Department officer, McCarron said. The Memphis Safe Task Force was created last year by President Donald Trump. Tennessee National Guard troops have served on the task force since last fall.
Four days earlier, on July 5, two Guardsmen fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson during a downtown pursuit after they said he turned toward them with a gun. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling both cases and will forward its findings to the local district attorney general.
