English Council Election Results Show Major Seat Changes

Counting proceeded in local council elections across England on May 8 2026 as results showed substantial shifts in seat totals for the main parties. One party recorded a net gain of 349 seats while a second party registered a net loss of 247 seats. A third party gained 35 seats and a fourth lost 136 seats.

Two smaller parties gained 25 and lost 24 seats respectively. The tallies stood at 349 seats for the party with the largest gain, 245 for the party that lost the most ground, 237 for the party with a moderate increase, 215 for the party with significant losses, 48 for one of the smaller parties, and 33 for the remaining group of parties.

Counting had not yet begun in elections for the Scottish Parliament and the Senedd in Wales. All seats and changes for parties in those contests remained undeclared. Officials continued to process ballots from the English council votes throughout the day.
