Nearly 40 percent of nonorganic fruits and vegetables grown in California contain traces of PFAS pesticides, according to a March report. California supplies nearly half of the vegetables and more than three-quarters of the fruits and nuts eaten in the United States.
The EPA states PFAS are linked to higher risk of cancer, obesity, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, decreased fertility, reproductive and developmental disruptions, and immune system damage. The Trump administration delayed or rolled back strict rules set by the Biden administration on toxic PFAS levels in drinking water.
In mid-November 2025 the EPA changed its website definition of PFAS chemicals.
The revised page states that EPA-approved single fluorinated compounds are not forever chemicals, are not PFAS, and do not pose any risks of concern when used as labeled. The change was coordinated by OCSPP Deputy Assistant Administrator Kyle Kunkler, Assistant Administrator Doug Troutman, and Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator Nancy Beck.
Kunkler was formerly senior director of government affairs for the American Soybean Association.
Troutman was formerly general counsel of the American Cleaning Institute. Beck was formerly an executive for the American Chemistry Council. One day after approving the three new PFAS pesticides, the EPA proposed requiring U.S.
Drinking water to be monitored for TFA under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Two of the newly approved pesticides, diflufenican and epyrifenacil, will degrade into multiple smaller PFAS chemicals including trifluoroacetic acid, which has a half-life of hundreds of years.
The European Chemicals Agency states trifluoroacetic acid is a persistent forever chemical and a direct breakdown product of almost all PFAS pesticides.
The U.S. Supreme Court blocked a citizen lawsuit against Bayer regarding glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Studies have linked heavy, chronic exposure of glyphosate to a 41 percent greater risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
