The EU AI Act provision requiring AI systems to disclose that they are artificial when interacting with users activates on August 2, 2026. Forbes reported that the rule appears in Article 50, titled Transparency Obligations for Providers and Deployers of Certain A. The EU AI Act passed last year.
It includes a reasonable person clause that exempts disclosure if the interaction would be obvious to a reasonable person. Some US states have enacted comparable AI disclosure laws. Forbes reported estimates of well over 1,000 AI-related bills and laws under consideration at the state level.
No comprehensive federal AI law exists in the United States as of July 13, 2026. OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022. Forbes noted that the launch heightened concerns about users mistaking AI for human interlocutors.
