Sen. Mitch McConnell Hospitalized After June 14 Fall, Remains in Rehabilitation

Sen. Mitch McConnell said Sunday that a fall on June 14 led to his hospitalization and left him briefly unconscious. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican underwent a battery of tests to determine the cause and developed pneumonia during his hospital stay, which was treated with antibiotics.

McConnell is currently in a rehabilitation center. He stated he will not return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet but continues to work with his staff on Senate business. His attending physician confirmed he sustained only minor injuries after a comprehensive evaluation, and doctors ruled out broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages.

McConnell’s office released a photo of him smiling with his wife Elaine Chao from the rehabilitation facility. He explained the weeks of limited public updates by noting that folks of his generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older. “Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct — I can’t help it,” he added.
