Europe Registers 1.2 Million Battery Electric Vehicles in First Half of 2026, Outpacing 2025 but Trailing China on Market Share

Europe recorded 1.2 million new battery electric vehicle registrations in the first half of 2026, according to data compiled by New AutoMotive, Fier Automotive and E-Mobility Europe and reported by GB News. The total exceeded the 928,000 units registered in the first half of 2025. June registrations alone reached 275,000 vehicles and accounted for 27.4 percent of the EU-wide market.

France registered nearly 56,000 new electric cars that month, equal to three in ten new vehicle sales. All-time high sales occurred in Slovenia and Czechia. Italy posted the strongest half-year growth at 97.9 percent year on year.

France grew 61.3 percent, Germany 48.6 percent and Spain 31 percent. European registrations rose 39.5 percent year on year in June, outpacing growth in China. Norway maintained the highest electric-vehicle market share at 96.5 percent.

Denmark reached 79.1 percent, Ireland 51.2 percent, Finland 48.9 percent and the Netherlands 43.5 percent. Tesla recorded 3,222 registrations in Norway, a 42.9 percent decline from June 2025. Gurjeet Grewal, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, said the figures show the electric transition moving from early adoption into the mainstream.

He added that rising volumes deliver better choice, more competitive pricing and stronger used-vehicle markets. Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive, stated that Europe is now setting the pace globally. He said governments and industry must ensure charging infrastructure and market conditions sustain momentum through the rest of the year.

Chris Heron, CEO of E-Mobility Europe, described June totals as rewriting the record books for the EU's EV market. He noted that countries from Denmark to Spain and from France to Czechia are reaching new heights in adoption.
