Evan Yionoulis Named Dean of Yale David Geffen School of Drama
Evan Yionoulis, current dean of The Juilliard School’s drama division, has been appointed as the new dean of the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale, effective July 1. She will succeed James Bundy, who has held the position for nearly 25 years following his retirement announcement last year.

The David Geffen School of Drama offers a tuition-free Master of Fine Arts program and acting opportunities at the Yale Repertory Theatre, where Yionoulis will also serve as artistic director.

She has also worked as a director outside academia, earning an Obie Award for her contributions. Her directing credits include Adrienne Kennedy’s Ohio State Murders, which received the Lortel Award for best revival, and the world premiere of Kennedy’s He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box.

Search advisory committee chair Marc Robinson commented on Yionoulis’s qualifications. He noted her teaching approach and production history. The David Geffen School of Drama counts notable alumni including Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Brian Tyree Henry, and Paul Giamatti.
The appointment occurs amid ongoing discussions in theater education about affordability and professional preparation. Both Juilliard and Yale are prominent institutions for drama training. Yionoulis’s return to Yale connects her prior experience with future leadership responsibilities.
