Families of missing persons in Guadalajara placed images of their relatives on walls, street lights and landmarks along Avenida Chapultepec in the style of football stickers during the 2026 World Cup. The displays aimed to connect the tournament's public attention with the disappearance crisis in Jalisco state. More than 16,000 people are listed as missing in Jalisco state records.

Drug cartel violence accounts for most cases, though some abductions appear random. Search collectives chose the sticker format to link the event with ongoing searches. "Search collectives decided to use the visibility and public attention generated by the World Cup to remind society of the disappearance crisis affecting Mexico," said Edith Olivares of Amnesty International Mexico.

Some families viewed the tournament as sportswashing yet used the international focus to seek pressure on Mexican authorities and the United Nations. A Guadalajara-based security advisor stated that the Jalisco Cartel uses forced recruitment and disappearances to maintain control. The advisor noted that many victims have no criminal background.

One 17-year-old disappeared while selling a motorbike, after which his uncle vanished during the search. A 34-year-old father disappeared after leaving to buy shoes; his remains were found months afterward. Canada lost 2-1 to Switzerland at BC Stadium in Vancouver, ending its chance of home knockout matches, but advanced from Group B after a 6-0 win over Qatar.

Midfielder Liam Millar said he had never seen such passion in stadiums for Canada's games. Streets filled with mariachi bands and supporters after Mexico's 1-0 win over South Korea in Guadalajara. A waiter on Avenida Chapultepec said the matches provide a distraction from local problems despite ongoing concerns.
