Fans sue StubHub over canceled World Cup ticket orders

Julia Reeker Moghal paid $1,905 for three tickets to the June 18 Switzerland-Bosnia and Herzegovina match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. She received conflicting notices about ticket readiness and cancellation, drove to the stadium on match day, and never obtained the tickets or a promised refund.

Reuben Renteria paid $2,294 for two tickets to the June 18 Mexico-South Korea match in Guadalajara, Mexico. His order was also canceled after a ready notification, and he received a refund only after repeated complaints but still incurred travel costs.

Lawsuit details The complaint alleges StubHub engaged in false and misleading sales practices and states that Moghal and Renteria represent potentially hundreds or thousands of buyers whose tickets either did not exist, were revoked without notice, or were erased.

It attributes the problems to what FIFA described as poor digital infrastructure. The suit requests monetary damages, an order barring StubHub from selling World Cup tickets, and distribution of profits from such sales to affected customers.

Company and organizer responses StubHub declined to comment on the lawsuit but stated its goal is to get fans into events and that its FanProtect Guarantee provides replacement tickets or refunds when issues arise. The company attributed reported problems largely to the event organizer's ticketing infrastructure.

FIFA stated it has no visibility or control over secondary-market transactions on third-party platforms and rejected any suggestion that functional issues on those platforms stem from its own ticketing system. FIFA encourages purchases through its official marketplace, which applies a 30 percent surcharge on resales split between buyer and seller.
