FIFA has banned fans from bringing refillable plastic water bottles into stadiums for the 2026 World Cup. The prohibition takes effect one week before the opening match on June 11, when Mexico faces South Africa. FIFA stated the change aims to prevent risk and injury to players and attendees.

“FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff,” the organization said in a statement to Reuters. The rule change applies policies already in place at certain venues. Before the reversal, FIFA told NPR that extreme-heat measures would include shaded areas, misting systems, cooling buses, and expanded water distribution.

Free Lions, the English national team’s traveling fan embassy, said it had been assured during discussions that free water would be available and that fans could bring their own bottles. The group shared a graphic indicating reusable bottles would be permitted. Players and coaches raised heat concerns during last summer’s Club World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund kept bench players in air-conditioned locker rooms rather than on the sideline. NPR reported that two-thirds of all 2026 World Cup matches carry high or moderate heat risk, including every game at MetLife Stadium. FIFA is requiring a three-minute cooling break near the 22nd minute of each half and has installed air conditioning on team benches.

The tournament opens with the Mexico versus South Africa match on June 11.
