New Scientist reported that a fifth movie in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series has been confirmed. The announcement came earlier this month. The first film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was released in 2011 and introduced Caesar, a chimpanzee portrayed by Andy Serkis.

The story centers on the start of conflict between humans and apes after Caesar gains intelligence from an experimental treatment.

Planet of the Apes followed in 2014 and is set about ten years after the events of Rise. It depicts a world where most humans have died from a virus linked to the same treatment. War for the Planet of the Apes, released in 2017, continues the story as a revenge narrative.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, released in 2024, takes place three centuries later and introduces a new chimpanzee character named Noa.

The new film remains untitled and has no announced release date.

Reports indicate it will be set closer to the year 3978, the time period of the original 1968 Planet of the Apes film. Bethan Ackerley, a subeditor at New Scientist, wrote that the four existing films were well received by critics and audiences but did not win Oscars or achieve major pop-culture impact.
