Finland defeated Switzerland 1-0 in overtime on Sunday to win the ice hockey world championship in Zurich. Buffalo Sabres center Konsta Helenius scored the game-winning goal at 10:42 of the extra period. Helenius, 20, had one goal and four points in nine regular-season games after his promotion to Buffalo.

In the playoffs, where the Sabres won a first-round series against the Boston Bruins before losing to the Montreal Canadiens, he recorded two goals in four games before leaving North America to join Team Finland. Florida Panthers forward Anton Lundell and Mikko Lehtonen assisted on the goal that beat Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni, who made 27 saves.

Justus Annunen stopped all 22 shots he faced for Finland and finished last season with a 10-12-2 record for the Nashville Predators.

Finland's victory marked its fifth world championship title. The country previously won in 1995, 2011, 2019 and 2022.
