A fire that started in a townhouse in Drammen, Norway, around 3:30 p.m. Friday destroyed more than 100 homes and spread into nearby forests. Dozens of firefighters worked through the night while helicopters dropped water on the flames.
Local police said Saturday morning that the blaze was still not under control. The fire spread quickly amid dry and hot weather conditions. Hundreds of people evacuated the area, and many went to an evacuation center, according to Norway's public broadcaster NRK.
No residents have been reported missing and no casualties have been confirmed. Drammen lies roughly 34 kilometers southwest of Oslo. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. "It says something about the heat we've had lately.
It's been very dry. So once the fire started, it spread quickly. That's what we've seen," Thomas Evjen, a Drammen Red Cross worker, told Reuters.
