A fire broke out near Ores in Spain’s northeastern Aragon region on 15 July, Euronews reported. The blaze started during an intense heatwave and spread quickly across dry vegetation. Authorities carried out the precautionary evacuation of at least five villages.
Thick smoke blanketed the area as flames threatened homes, farmland and critical infrastructure. Spain’s specialised Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME) was deployed alongside civilian firefighting crews. Helicopters and water-bombing aircraft carried out repeated drops.
Regional official Roberto Bermúdez de Castro called the fire one of the more serious recent incidents in Aragon, though no deaths have been reported. Firefighters faced temperatures approaching 40°C, very low humidity and shifting winds. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged full government support for ongoing emergency operations and assistance for affected communities.
The fire occurred one week after a wildfire in Almería province killed 13 people, including seven British nationals. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), nearly 400,000 hectares burned across Spain during last year’s record wildfire season.
