Fitness studio reports link ringworm cases to reformer machines

Multiple customers of a fitness studio chain have reported ringworm infections after attending classes that use sweatlana reformer machines. The infections have been linked by users to contact with the machines during workouts. Some participants have posted on Reddit that they received diagnoses after visiting locations in Brooklyn and Greenwich Village.

Cleaning practices The company states that studios receive professional cleaning and that machines are treated every two weeks with an EPA- and FDA-approved antimicrobial coating effective for up to 90 days. Clients are responsible for wiping machines after each session. Classes run from 5 a.m. to as late as 10:45 p.m. at some sites.

Spread and prevention Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that can remain on floors, mats, and equipment. Some users note that participants often work out barefoot, increasing skin contact with surfaces. A company representative said the health and safety of the 250,000 monthly visitors across more than 170 studios is the top priority.

Customers have suggested the company send location-specific alerts when infections are reported. Standard prevention steps include showering immediately after workouts, drying completely, and wearing footwear in shared areas.
