Floods and Typhoons Kill at Least 11 in Southern China

At least 11 people have died in southern China after days of heavy rain triggered flash floods and a rare tornado, according to multiple reports. Hundreds of residents were evacuated as rivers overflowed their banks. The tornado struck Ezhou in Hubei province with winds reported at 160 mph, uprooting trees, collapsing market stalls and damaging buildings including a restaurant entrance.

In Nanning, Guangxi, officials confirmed four deaths from overflowing rivers and reservoirs. Fifty-five thousand people were affected and the city's flood emergency response was raised to its highest level. In Guigang, 170 miles from Nanning, local authorities reported 16 people missing after a landslide and 33 others swept away by floodwaters.

Water levels at the Guigang Hydrological Station continued to rise under monitoring by the Ministry of Water Resources. The Chinese government allocated 100 million yuan for disaster relief in Guangxi and an additional 160 million yuan for flood and typhoon response across six other regions.

Maysak made landfall on Hainan Island and moved inland, bringing intense rainfall to southern China. Weather expert Wang Xiaoling stated that tornadoes are uncommon in Hubei province, with the last significant event occurring in 2021. Super Typhoon Bavi passed Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota with sustained winds reported at 180 mph and is strengthening over the Pacific.

Forecasters expect it to bring torrential rain and damaging winds to eastern China and Taiwan later this week. Taiwan mobilized nearly 30,000 soldiers for emergency operations ahead of further severe weather.
