Florentino Pérez Re-elected Real Madrid President Until 2030 After Trophyless Season
Pérez won 65 percent of the vote against challenger Enrique Riquelme. The result clears the way for José Mourinho to return as head coach.
ABC NewsFlorentino Pérez was re-elected president of Real Madrid until 2030 after receiving 65 percent of the vote in the club's presidential election. He obtained 21,741 votes compared with 11,814 for challenger Enrique Riquelme, a renewable energy magnate. The election marked the first time in 20 years that a challenger stood against Pérez, who has held the post since 2009.
Real Madrid is owned by its members, who elect the president. Pérez announced the election during an extraordinary news conference last month. "We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles," he said.
"We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup," Pérez added. "We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the best stadium in the world. " José Mourinho is set to be confirmed as the club's new head coach.
The 63-year-old signed a three-year deal last month, but the contract was conditional on Pérez remaining in office. Mourinho is leaving Benfica, where he took charge in September and guided the team to third place in the Primeira Liga. Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
He will replace Álvaro Arbeloa, who took over in January after Xabi Alonso departed. Real Madrid ended the 2025-26 season without silverware. Barcelona claimed the La Liga title with a 2-0 victory in the El Clasico.
Pérez promised to make a club-record offer for an unnamed "great player" if re-elected. Mourinho's last trophy was the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022. Pérez is 79 years old.
