680news.comThe Philadelphia Flyers acquired goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday. The Flyers sent goaltender Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to Toronto in the deal. 67 million against the NHL salary cap for each of the next two seasons.
35 million. Daniel Briere, the Flyers general manager, spoke at a predraft news conference in Voorhees, New Jersey. "We thought it was a chance to improve the team, help them take another step," Briere said.
Dan Vladar is the prospective starting goaltender for the Flyers and is eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1. Briere said the team and Vladar's camp were working to complete that extension. The addition of Woll is intended to allow a better sharing of the crease than when Ersson struggled early last season.
"The better you can have both of them going, I think it helps," Briere said. "It prevents injuries and (Vladar) stays fresh and he can, I think, perform better. " Simon Benoit is 28 years old, stands 6-foot-4 and weighs over 200 pounds.
Briere said the Flyers wanted a larger defenseman after relying on smaller players Cam York and Jamie Drysdale. "It's going to probably be a little easier for the coaches having a guy like Simon Benoit back there to use," Briere said. "We like the physicality that he brings, and we like the size and the skating aspect, too.
Emil Andrae and Samuel Ersson are restricted free agents. John Chayka, the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager who took over in early May, spoke on a video call with reporters. The trade was his first roster change since becoming general manager.
