Former Blue Jays Infielder Elects Free Agency After Dodgers Release

Santiago Espinal has cleared waivers and elected free agency after the Los Angeles Dodgers designated the veteran infielder for assignment. The move occurred when Tommy Edman returned from the injured list. Espinal had signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers the day after his release in late May.
Espinal spent his first four major-league seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and was selected as an All-Star in 2022. He later played two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before returning to the Dodgers organization. During his most recent stint, he batted .268 in 36 games and recorded four extra-base hits. The Dodgers had previously outrighted him to accommodate Kiké Hernández.
Espinal, 31, is now seeking a new major-league opportunity.
His ability to play multiple infield positions may attract interest from teams needing defensive depth.
